The idea for Punkish was granted to my small brain in around 2001 time when, after spending most of that year following Feeder around the country, started to get into their support acts- many of whom would play club shows of their own accord. It made me realise a few things, for example:
Gigs do not begin and end with Brixton Academy.
Feeder aren't really all that exciting.
That discovering new talent brings lots of joy. Sort of.
However, although spending many nights drinking in Camden clubs & pubs in the name of internetfanzines was muchly fun, it was also incredibly expensive. And being so far away from central London where all the action is made it quite hard to go as often as I'd like. And I thought to myself- "Hey! Wouldn't it be cool to have gigs put on near me so I wouldn't have to go far?"
Being a fairly late bloomer rawk wise, the old Ilford indie mecca The Island means nothing to me but distant folklore, and since it was turned into a theme pub a few years ago, the indie scene has died down in the area.
So, together with the help of my friend Ian, we've decided to try and bring some new, raw talent to our homeplace, and make it easy for young people to discover music that they probably wouldn't hear down Jumpin' Jaks. Bring on the revolution!
Lauren.
